Ken pushes the walk button then waits for the green light that guides him over the crosswalk toward the Shop ‘N Save that has the only half reliable wheelchair toilet around. This is the last stop before he catches the MUNI train to his bed at the county shelter. If the toilet is out of order, he’ll likely piss his sweats . . .

Standing near the door on the porch, I watched Mama prepare the special dinner. Her red sweater with apricot blossoms made her particularly pretty. Her famous ginger chicken was steaming in an iron pot, its aroma saturating the air. The suh-suh-suh of her cutting the lotus roots on the board, the sizzling and splattering as she poured the slices into hot oil, and the thunk-thunk of her spatula touching the pan made my stomach growl and my heart dance with expectation . . . .
